PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane separation apparatus in which a membrane element can be uniformly cleaned with gas or gas-liquid multiphase fluid even in a horizontal membrane separation apparatus. SOLUTION: An inflow port 6 of raw water is provided on the front end face of a pressure-resistant vessel 2, and an outflow port 10 of condensed water and introducing ports 21-24 for gas or gas-liquid multiphase fluid are provided on the rear end face. The outflow port 10 of the condensed water is disposed at an upper part of the rear end face of the pressure-resistant vessel 2. The introducing port 21 among the four introducing ports 21-24 is disposed at a lower part of the rear end face. With valves 12, 15 closed and valves 31a-34a, 36, 41, 45 opened, a compressor 37b and a pump 43 are operated to supply gas and backwash water to a membrane module 1, thereby cleaning the membrane element 3 with the gas-liquid multiphase fluid.
