PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To grasp the residual quantity of liquid in a liquid cartridge when it is mounted, without forcing an increase in cost of a recording device. SOLUTION: Light shielding parts 162a and 162b for shielding light emitted from a light emitting part, and a slit 161 through which the emitted light passes and reaches a light receiving part are formed in a part 115b to be irradiated. When the liquid cartridge is mounted on the recording device in a direction 144, the light shielding parts 162a and 162b and the slit 161 pass through a detecting position 142 which is irradiated with the emitted light. Therefore, the intensity of the light received by the light receiving part is changed between A0 and A1. Besides, as the part 115b to be irradiated moves in accordance with the decrease in the liquid in a liquid storage chamber, the number of times when the intensity of the light becomes A0 and the number of times when the intensity becomes A1 are changed in accordance with the residual quantity of the liquid. Accordingly, by detecting the number of times when the intensity of the light becomes A0 and the number of times when the intensity of the light becomes A1, the residual quantity of the liquid when the cartridge is mounted can be obtained.
