<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly detect an object in a wide area and in detail. <P>SOLUTION: A reading part 20 determines the area and resolution of image reading in accordance with a detected object area. With the process of image reading and the process of area determination repeated, the area is narrowed to the detected object area with increasing resolution for recognition of a desired object.
