PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quenching method capable of suppressing the sticking of soot onto a workpiece and the blackening of the workpiece and quenching the workpiece at lower running cost than heretofore. SOLUTION: Nitrogen gas and methanol, are supplied into a furnace body 21 and the methanol is thermally decomposed to generate the atmospheric gas containing 3.5-6 vol% carbon-monoxide gas and 0.02-0.1 vol% carbon-dioxide gas and having carbon potential of 0.4-0.5%. At the period of time from the charging of a basket 12, in which the workpiece 41 is incorporated, into the furnace body 21 until the temperature in the furnace body 21 exceeds 700°C, the supply of the methanol into the furnace body 21 is stopped to suppress the production of the soot and the carbon dioxide by a Boudouard reaction of the carbon monoxide gas produced from the methanol.
