Provided is an enzyme protein which is usable as an enzyme for enzyme replacement therapy for Tay-Sachs disease and Sandoffs disease, has little harmful side effects such as allergic reaction or anaphylactic reaction, is highly stable in blood (plasma) and can be easily incorporated into cells of an injured organ. Also provided are a gene encoding said protein and so on. An altered ß-subunit protein obtained by changing the structure at the active site of the ß-subunit of wild type human ß-hexosaminidase and thus acquiring an activity originating in the a-subunit of wild type human ß-hexosaminidase; and a homo dimer protein (altered ß-hexosaminidase B) of the same.
