<p>The present invention describes a device for characterizing a surface of skin that may comprise an event, for example a wrinkle, a fine line, a furrow, a pore, a scar, an ulcer, in particular of facial skin, this device comprising illuminating means (12), acquisition means (13), image processing means and characterization means, this device being notable in that said illuminating means (12) are arranged so as to create, at the level of said event, at least one shadow of which the light intensity gradient is greater than that associated with the phenomenon of backprojection by reflection on the dermis and through the epidermis of the near-red wavelengths, and in that said image processing means are arranged so as to extract a discriminating piece of information using the light intensity gradient associated with said shadow.
