PURPOSE: A map information providing apparatus using an SMS(Short Message Service) in a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to share location information with the terminal which does not have the interpretation ability of map data. CONSTITUTION: A controller(212) extracts map data around a destination. The controller writes out a short message showing the map data. A communication unit(206) transmits the short message to an opponent portable terminal. The controller calculates the relative coordinate of the destination and at least one POI(Point Of Interest) on the basis of zero point. The controller writes out a road, the destination, and at least one POI to the short message by using special characters.
