Polyvinyl alcohol in solid particulate form is treated with formaldehyde or a dialdehyde in an amount insufficient to impair the solubility in aqueous solvents but sufficient to reduce agglomeration of the polyvinyl alcohol when added to water. Specified dialdehydes are glyoxal, malon-, succin-, glutar-, adip-, aldehydes, heptanedial and octanedial. The aldehyde may be used in solution in a liquid in which the polyvinyl alcohol is insuluble, or in vapour form or in the form of an aerosol. |
