The method involves transmitting a telegram (3) from a communication device (2) to another communication device (1). Duration of response time (6a) is monitored, where the response time defines a time period between transmission of the telegram and receipt of a response (4). Comparison is made to verify whether elapsed time is greater than preset maximum runtime (7). A fault message is generated during exceeding of the maximum runtime. A time value is predefined based on an operating state of the latter device for the maximum runtime. An independent claim is also included for a communication device comprising an interface.
