<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve front luminance and light extraction efficiency by optimizing combination with a polarizer while considering relationship of refractivity among three axes in a ridge line direction, arrangement direction, and thickness direction of a prism. <P>SOLUTION: The lighting system or liquid crystal display device includes a prism 11P arranged between the polarizer 6 and a light source having a ridge line Pr in a first direction on one surface, wherein a plurality of prism sheets 11 have each arranged continuously in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. When refractivity of the prism in the ridge line direction is nx, refractivity in the arrangement direction is ny, and refractivity in the thickness direction is nz, and nx>ny, nz or ny<nx, nz, the ridge line direction of the prism is made orthogonal to a transmission axis 6a of the polarizer 6.
