PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of hitting noise in a variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine, in which an engagement pin capable of moving in the axial direction of a cam shaft so as to be detachably engaged with a lock section provided on one end surface of a free cam and having a circular lateral cross section is connected to the cam shaft, preventing relative rotation thereof around the axis of the cam shaft, and arranged at a position offset from the axis of the cam shaft. SOLUTION: The lock sections 56, 57 and 58 includes: circular grooves 56a, 57a and 58a extending long in the rotating direction 59 of the cam shaft so that the tip of the engagement pin can be fitted therein; and circular recesses 56b, 57b and 58b continued to front ends of the grooves 56a, 57a and 58a along the rotating direction 59 so that the tip of the engagement pin can be engaged therewith. These lock sections are provided on one end surface of the free cam 50, forming the depth of the circular recesses 56b-58b deeper than the depth of the groove parts 56a-58a.
