<p>Disclosed is a method for producing a novolac resin, wherein a phenol and an aldehyde are reacted with each other in the presence of a catalyst that contains calcium chloride and an acid. The method is characterized in that a novolac resin having a low molecular weight and a low melt viscosity is efficiently produced by reacting a phenol and an aldehyde with each other under mild conditions.</p>
