PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change to a proper condition even from a first sheet in a sheet stacking part, by accurately discriminating the kind of the sheet. SOLUTION: Before feeding the sheet to an image forming part, the sheet stacked on a paper feeding cassette 401 is slidingly moved by a paper feeding roller 402. The tip of the sheet slid by the paper feeding roller 402 abuts on movable members 102-106, and the movable members 102-106 move by pressing of the sheet tip. A moving distance detecting part 120 detects a moving distance of the movable members 103, 104 and 105, and a control part discriminates the kind of sheet based on a moving distance signal from the moving distance detecting part 120 for indicating the detected moving distance.
