<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map information management device extracting a vacant area from a travel image and including information on the vacant area in map information. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The map information management device acquires travel image data or the like on a road, carries out predetermined analysis processing on the image data, specifies vacant area information in the image data, and registers the vacant area information in the map information. Specifically, a vacant area information registering means registers the vacant area information in linkage with a link corresponding to an image data photographing position when the map information has the link. Since the map information management device thus specifies the vacant area from the image data and registers information on the vacant area in the map information, it can hold information for determining whether a road around a place regarding the image data photographing position is open or not.
