A steam generator for cooking devices comprises a container (112) and a heating device (128). In a free volume of an interior of the container (112), which has a water supply region, water (118) for evaporation is housed. Said water (118) is heated by a heating device (128) at least to boiling point, whereupon steam is produced, flowing along a steam supply region of the container (112). The heating device (128) is advantageously a thick layer heating device (130) arranged on the outer surface (126) of the container (112) in the water supply region. The water and steam flowing past with a sinking water level cool the heating device (128).
