The driver air bag system has an air generator (40) connected to a housing base (16). A folded airbag (70) is provided within a housing (12), where a vibration damper of a tubular elastic element is arranged outside the housing. A fastening device or base plate (30) is provided, which connects both the housing and the vibration damper with a steering wheel body (60) of a vehicle steering wheel. The tubular elastic element is made of elastomeric material.
