<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hinge assembly enabling automatic opening by a lid body with respect to a body after the lid body is opened at a small angle with respect to the body, and also to provide a portable electronic device using the hinge assembly. <P>SOLUTION: The hinge assembly includes a main shaft, a first cam member installed in the main shaft, a second cam member slidably fitted to the main shaft, and an elastic member fitted to the main shaft and applying elastic force to the second cam member. Two first cam parts are symmetrically installed at one end of the first cam member, and two second cam parts engaged with the first cam member are symmetrically installed at one end of the second cam member. A first cam face including a first abutment inclined face, a first projecting crest, a first gently inclined face and a first recessed valley is installed in each of the two first cam parts of the first cam member. A second cam face including a second projecting crest is installed in each of the two second cam parts of the second cam member.
