PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device detecting, at initial operation stage, a recurring malfunction that cannot be eliminated only by rebooting after detecting the malfunction related to the function of pressure contact and separation. SOLUTION: The image forming device for forming an image through a process for transferring toner images formed on each of a plurality of imaging units onto one transfer medium is provided with: a pressure contact and separation means for entering either pressure contact mode or separation mode including two states or more by switching between pressure contact and separation of a plurality of imaging units and the transfer medium; a detection means for detecting the malfunction related to the pressure contact and separation means; and restore means (steps S28-S33) for operating and inspecting the device based on a transition pattern between all the pressure contact and separation modes being likely to occur between the pressure contact and separation modes including two states or more to perform restore operation when the malfunction is detected by the detection means.
