<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine capable of performing premixed charge compression ignition for controlling injection timing or ignition timing in accordance with deviation from a desired value of an exhaust gas recirculation ratio, or of a supercharging pressure, while performing a single fuel injection. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the engine (internal combustion engine) capable of performing premixed charge compression ignition by a single fuel injection contributing to combustion through an injector injecting fuel into a combustion chamber, the control apparatus for the internal combustion engine detects an actual supercharging pressure by a supercharger to control operation of the supercharger so that the deviation of the detected actual supercharging pressure and a desired supercharging pressure is decreased; detects an actual exhaust gas recirculation ratio by an exhaust gas recirculation device to control operation of the exhaust gas recirculation device so that a deviation of the detected actual exhaust gas recirculation ratio and a desired exhaust gas recirculation ratio is decreased; and controls desired ignition timing or desired injection timing in accordance with at least either the deviation of the desired supercharging pressure and the actual supercharging pressure, or the deviation of the desired exhaust gas recirculation ratio and the actual exhaust gas recirculation ratio.
