The positive electrode of a sealed storage battery cell is permanently charged to a greater extent than the negative electrode by placing in the cell a means capable of giving off oxygen to the active material of either of the electrodes, closing the cell and causing the means to give off oxygen before using the cell for normal discharge. The means for giving off oxygen may be a suitably charged auxiliary electrode or a chemical oxidation agent, e.g. a peroxide or superoxide. A fine powder of insulating material may be mixed with the electrolyte, e.g. aluminium oxide in alkaline cells and infusorial earth in lead-acid cells. Powdered plastic material may also be used. |
