摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight for a liquid crystal display, which has small power consumption in a simple structure. <P>SOLUTION: In the backlight 1 for a liquid crystal display device, the screen of a liquid crystal panel 4 is divided into a plurality of rectangular zones, each edge-light type light guide plate 5 is arranged corresponding to each of the rectangular zones, and a plurality of LEDs 6 are arranged on an end face of each light guide plate 5. The brightness of an image displayed on each rectangular zone is obtained on the basis of an image signal, and the brightness of the plurality of LEDs 6 corresponding to respective rectangular zones is controlled on the basis of the brightness. Accordingly, the power consumption can be reduced in comparison with the case in which the whole liquid crystal panel 4 is illuminated with uniform brightness.
