PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain stable focusing when bringing a subject to be focused into focus by using a subject detecting function, especially in shooting a moving image. SOLUTION: A face in a photographing screen is detected based on an image signal obtained by photographing the subject. When the face is detected, a face area and an area including the face area are set as a plurality of focus detection areas (S14 and S15). When the face is not detected, a predetermined fixed area and an area including the fixed area are set as the plurality of focus detection areas (S13 and S15). From the image signals of the plurality of set focus detection areas, focus signals are respectively generated (S16), and an addition ratio for synthesizing the plurality of focus signals is decided (S18 and S19) according to a result of face detection (S17). On the basis of the decided addition ratio, the plurality of focus signals are synthesized (S20).
