The unit (30) has an interface for receiving signals from a projected sensor unit (20), where a controlling unit evaluates the signals received from the sensor unit for detecting contact of vehicles (1, 41, 61) with an object. The controlling unit provides control signals based on an evaluation result. Control signals control actuator systems (10, 50, 70) are arranged in an area of vehicle structures (2, 42, 62) before the contact of the vehicles with the object such that energy absorbing characteristics of the vehicle structures are changed and adapted to another contact of the vehicles. An independent claim is also included for an operating method for a person protection system in a vehicle.
