PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an unsightly moving image wherein the whole screen is blurred from being recorded while stably performing focusing when transiting from a state of detecting a main photographic subject to a state undetected, in focus detection using a photographic subject detection function. SOLUTION: This focus adjustment device detects the specific photographic subject inside a photographic screen based on an image signal obtained by photographing the photographic subject (S12), sets an area of the photographic subject as a focus detection area when detected (S14), sets a preset prescribed area as the focus detection area when not detected (S33), generates a focus signal from the image signal of the focus detection area (S20), and moves a focus adjustment member based on the focus signal to perform focus adjustment control (S21). When a focusing degree of the prescribed area is higher than a preset threshold value when transiting the state that the photographic subject is detected to the undetected state, the focus adjustment device suppresses drive of the focus adjustment member for a preset time after the photographic subject has not been detected (S27).
