<p>The method involves operating exhaust gas sensor (14) arranged in an exhaust gas area with an exhaust gas sensor-diagnostic temperature-set point. The exhaust gas sensor-diagnostic temperature-set point lies above the evaporation temperature of reagent material in the exhaust gas area and below the danger temperature of the exhaust gas sensor. The dosage (m-ReaTro, Vol-ReaTro, n-ReaTro) for the reagent material drop entry (13) is determined on the basis of a quantity of the heat energy supplied for a heating element (15) of the exhaust gas sensor.
