<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus which prevents the degradation of the image quality of a magnified image by generating highly reliable interpolated pixels when magnifying an original image, and to provide an image processing method and a computer program. <P>SOLUTION: A target area including a target pixel 5 is extracted from a plurality of pixels forming a video image based on video signals, and the average of an absolute value difference sum of luminance values of pixels arranged along the column direction, the line direction and the orthogonal direction in the target area is computed for each direction. The directions are ranked as a candidate for edge direction in the increasing order of the averages, and the luminance value of interpolated pixels 51 and 52 for the target pixel 5 is computed on the basis of the luminance values of the pixels arranged along the higher-rank two directions.
