<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization control element which is a thin flat plate type optical element and has high polarization control efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: The polarization control element 1 is constituted, by cyclically arraying a first shape metallic structure 3 obtained by bonding metallic dot structure whose shape viewed from an upper surface is square, and a second shape metallic structure 4, obtained by arranging metallic dot structure, whose shape viewed from an upper surface is square to be spaced by a predetermined distance on a supporting substrate 2, and utilizes a resonance effect of plasmon excited by the first shape metallic structure 3 and the second shape metallic structure 4, thereby providing the high polarization control efficiency, and attains a polarization changing function with thin and flat plate type constitution, and contriving reduction in the number of optical elements and the miniaturization of the image display device. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
