PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide cytotoxic conjugates of maytansinoids and cell binding agents which are useful as therapeutic agents which are delivered specifically to target cells and are cytotoxic. SOLUTION: The reactive maytansinoid derivatives are expressed by the following formula: maytansinoid-S-S-CR<SB>1</SB>R<SB>2</SB>-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>-CO<SB>2</SB>-X.
