Implantable medical devices such as stents can be made from biomaterials prepared by plasma polymerizing a metallic, ceramic, carbon or polymeric substrate and attaching to the substrate an extracellular protein. The preferred extracellular protein is an elastin, in particular tropoelastin. The tropoelastin can be engineered to form protoelastin. The elastins can be used in the form of a film on metal or polymer substrates, laminates of alternating polymer and elastin, blends of polymer and elastin, or elastin crosslinked with or tethered to a polymer or metal.
|
