Class 39(3) A pair of abutting carbonaceous electrodes 10a, 11a each with an internally threaded socket receive a common externally threaded carbonaceous nipple 12a having adjacent to the end portions thereof at least one cartridge - receiving recess 14a extending radially inward from the threaded surface of the nipple, said cartridge comprising a cylindrical core of fusible binder having a volume such that when fused, it will bind not more than 20 per cent of the thread clearance space between the nipple and the electrodes The cartridge is preformed and comprises a coal tar pitch with a M.P. of 75‹-200‹C. or a mixture of refractory oxides with water glass and is wrapped in paper with an outer wrapping of aluminium foil; and the material is set thermally when the electrode is used.
