A foldable wheelchair 20 includes a pair of rear-folding front legs 21, a pair of forward-folding rear legs 22, and a forward-folding backrest 24 with a pair of folding armrests 25. Front and rear pivoting means 26,27 pivotally connect a seat frame 23 to the front legs 21 and rear legs 22 respectively whilst a dual-hinge joint 28 pivotal connects a rear of the seat frame 23 to the backrest 24 such that the backrest can both recline rearward and tip forward to be folded against the seat frame 23. The front legs 21 are provided with small wheels 212 and are interconnected by transverse rods 211. Transverse rod 221 extends between the rear legs 22, each of which may be provided with a small diameter wheel 221, or a large diameter wheel [222a, Fig. 14]. The folding legs may be held in the open configuration by spring biased detents in the form of elastic beads [232, Figs. 9, 10] housed within the seat frame 23 and which engage holes [263, Figs. 9, 10] provided on pivot plates attached to the leg assemblies. The spring biased beads may be pressed against bias to release the beads from the holes in the pivot plates to allow the legs assemblies 21,22 to be collapsed towards the underside of the seat frame 23. The folding arrangement provides a wheelchair that is able to fold-up to a reduced volume compared to other folding wheelchairs (as shown in Fig. 2). |
