[Also in Group XXIX] In a leaf filter liquid enters a casing 10 through a valved inlet 20 to pass through the vertical filter leaves 16 to an outlet manifold 18 provided at one end with a valve 22 and at the other with a quick opening valve 36 operated by a handle 48. When the leaves are to be cleaned, the valves 20, 22 are closed, an overflow passage 34 is opened to lower the liquid level to just above the tops of the leaves and a pipe 30 is opened to a vacuum pump. Then the valve 36 is opened momentarily and the inrush of air causes the liquid to communicate mechanical shocks to the leaves to dislodge the dirt thereon, the dirt falling into a sump 12 whence it is removed periodically. |
