<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the configuration of an illumination optical system and reduce its cost while illuminating light can be efficiently applied at high brightness. <P>SOLUTION: An illuminating optical system 4 for applying illuminating light to an object to be read, and a receiving optical system having an imaging lens 9 and a photo sensor and receiving the light reflected from the object to be read to read barcodes, are provided inside a body case. The illuminating optical system 4 comprises three high-brightness LEDs 11 of a wide orientation angle and one illuminating lens 12 that collects light from the LEDs 11 to provide elongate, belt-like illuminating light. The illuminating lens 12 comprises a base part, three spherical lens parts 14 located on the side of an incidence plane and aligned horizontally on the side of the incidence plane correspondingly to the three LEDs 11 for collecting the light emitted from the LEDs 11, and a cylinder lens part 13 located on the side of the incidence plane for collecting incident light vertically (longitudinally), with all of the parts being integrated together.
