Provided is a liquid crystal display module having a liquid crystal display element, an optically anisotropic optical sheet on a backside of the display element, and a backlight element on the backside of the optical sheet. The angle of the phase advancing axial orientation or the phase retarding axial orientation, measured with respect to the short side of the display, of the optical sheet is at least &pgr;/16 but not more than 3&pgr;/16.
