PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus that can reduce power consumption during motion picture photographing, such as, live views, while avoiding increase in release time-lag. SOLUTION: The image pickup apparatus includes a shutter device 7 including a rear curtain 73, a rear curtain drive member 83 allowing the rear curtain 73 to travel, and a holding means generating attractive force through which the rear curtain drive member 83 is attracted. A control means of the image pickup apparatus allows an image pickup element to sequentially acquire time-series images, regarding object images passing through an opening OP of the shutter device 7, in such a state that the rear curtain drive member 83 is held at a given position, by being attracted by the holding means through the attractive force, based on the magnetic force of a permanent magnet of the holding means and the rear curtain 73 is maintained at an exposure start position. Furthermore, the control means allows energization of an electromagnet to start with a given timing, so as to generate a magnetic flux having a direction of canceling the magnetic flux of the permanent magnet to reduce the attractive force; this releases the holding of the rear curtain drive member 83; and the rear curtain 73 is allowed to travel, from the exposure start position toward an exposure end position.
