<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a counterweight for an elevator capable of reducing a size of a space in a hoistway while securing a floor area of a car. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The counterweight 91 includes a weight frame 92, and an upper weight 93 and a lower weight 94 mounted on the weight frame 92. The lower weight 94 can be displaced between an ordinary position projecting downward from the upper weight 93 in a height direction and a flat position in the upper weight 93 side than the ordinary position in the height direction and in the side separated from the upper weight 93 than the ordinary position in a horizontal direction.
