PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical encoder having a miniaturized sensor head. SOLUTION: The optical encoder 10 is formed of the sensor head 30 and a scale 20 displaceable about the sensor head 30. The sensor head 30 includes a light source 40, a photodetector 50, a parallel plate like light transmission material 60, and four height regulation members 70A, 70B, 70C, 70D. The light transmission material 60 has five conductive wiring patterns 62A, 62B, 62C, 62D, 62E on one face. The light source 40, photodetector 50 and height regulation members 70A, 70B, 70C, 70D are electrically connected to the conductive wiring patterns 62A, 62B, 62C, 62D, 62E and are fixed to the light transmission material 60. The height regulation members 70A, 70B, 70C, 70D are arranged to be separated from one another. Each of the height regulation members 70A, 70B, 70C, 70D has a flat attachment face 72 for attaching the sensor head 30.
