<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-traveling elevator freely moved in both of a longitudinal direction and a lateral direction without being restricted by a guide rail or a rope by a driving force of an elevator car itself, capable of dispensing with magnets arranged longitudinally and laterally on a hoistway, capable of using an ordinary electromagnetic wave for radio control, and capable of suitably making the elevator car not requiring an electromagnetic shield respond to a hall where a user waits as occasion may demand. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The self-traveling elevator 1 having a driving device in the elevator car 10 itself includes a suction plate 31 sucked to hoistway wall surfaces WB and WF, a suction machine 32 attached to the suction plate, at least a right and left pair of driving wheels 33 toward the hoistway wall surface, a skirt for improving sealing performance between the suction plate and the hoitway wall surface, and a connection part connecting the suction plate and the elevator car. The suction plate is sucked to the hoistway wall surface through the driving wheel by the suction machine, and is longitudinally and laterally moved on the hoistway wall surface by the driving wheel.
