[Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (b)] A method of making an inter-digital metalstructure, e.g. a wave-retarder for an oscillator, having metal-fingers projecting from different sides of a channel-shaped base-member, includes forming a channel 3 with slotted sides 2 in a metal, e.g. copper, base-member 1, Fig. 3, fixing into aligned slots finger-blanks 4 of copper or molybdenum, each having a cut-out portion 5, embedding the blanks in a dispersable solid-support-medium 6, separating the supported blanks into two parts at the cut-outs 5 by removing the top portions, so producing projecting fingers, Fig. 7, and then dispersing the support medium. During machining of the channel 3 the previously-formed slots 2 are filled with a synthetic resin supporting medium similar to that used for embedding the blanks 4. The resin may be a polymerized ethylene or a methyl methacrylate polymer, or alternatively the support medium may be type-metal. Dispersal of the support medium may be by heat, a solvent or a chemical reagent. The finger blanks may be brazed, soldered or welded to the base member, either prior to embedment in or after the removal of the support medium 6. Where slots 2 and the channel 3 are cut to the same depth, finger blanks with an additional cut-out at the bottom may be used. |
