An electrolytic plating or anodizing system comprises a bath and a still arranged to allow electrolyte to circulate from the bath through the still and to return; the still being capable of being subjected to vacuum for evaporating a portion of the electrolyte introduced into the still. An illustrated embodiment comprises plating bath 10, rinse baths 12 and 14, still 24 surrounded by steam jacket 26, separator 40, condenser 38 and vacuum source 36. Rinse water is supplied to bath 14 through pipe 16, to bath 12 through syphon 18 and to bath 10 through syphon 20. The articles to be plated are successively conveyed into bath 10, thence to bath 12 and thence to bath 14. Initial heating of the electrolyte in bath 10 to operating temperature is accomplished by drawing off electrolyte through pipe 22 to steam-jacketed vessel 24 and thence circulating it back to bath 10 through valves 30 and 32, pump 28 and pipe 33. Upon passing current in bath 10 during plating operations heat is generated. To maintain bath 10 at an optimum temperature the vessel 24 is operated as a still at subatmospheric pressure using vacuum source 36. Electrolyte is drawn into vessel 24 from bath 10 through pipe 22 and nozzle 23 by vacuum; a portion of the water is then evaporated and the concentrated electrolyte remaining is withdrawn and returned to bath 10 by pipe 33. The heat of vaporization cools the concentrated electrolyte in vessel 24 and this electrolyte, on return to bath 10, effects cooling thereof. Water vapour from still 24 is drawn by the vacuum through separator 40, where entrained particles of liquid are removed, and thence through conduit 35 to condenser 38. Liquid collected in separator 40 is returned to vessel 24 through trays 44. The distilled water condensed in condenser 38 is returned to bath 14 through pipes 46 and 16 and pump 48.
