PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a visual inspection device achieving high inspection performance, even in the case of a container having an approximately cylindrical outer circumferential surface such as an empty barrel. SOLUTION: This device (20) for inspecting the appearance of a container is provided with a rotating mechanism (3) for rotating the container (1) having an approximately cylindrical outer circumferential surface, and at least one line camera (5a and 5b) fixed to be positioned on the side of the outer circumferential surface of the container (1) during rotation. The device (20) is constituted so that the outer circumferential surface of the container (1) is imaged by the line camera (5a and 5b), while rotating the container (1) by the rotating mechanism (3), and that acceptance of the visual inspection is discriminated based on image data of the outer circumferential surface of the container (1) acquired therefrom.
