<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more accurately detect that a document has been brought into a state that it is suitable for image reading. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 1 comprises: an output acquiring section 21 for acquiring outputs from a plurality of photodetectors 17 disposed to constitute an image reading plane for reading an image of a document; a difference detecting section 22 for detecting an edge in the document or a document end on the basis of the output from at least a part of the photodetectors 17 out of outputs acquired by he output acquiring section 21; and an image information generating section 23 for generating the image information of the document using the outputs from the plurality of photodetectors 17 in the case that the edge or the document end is detected by the difference detecting section 22.
