<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a circuit and a method for correcting gamma, which perform excellent real time gamma correction based on screen histograms. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The gamma correction circuit has a histogram obtaining part (112) that obtains the histograms of upper and lower parts of an image, the parts being obtained by dividing one screen image into two parts using a specified horizontal scanning line, and a correction data creation part (114) which calculates gamma correction data for a current screen image based on the upper part histogram of the current screen image and the lower part histogram of the previous screen image.
