<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell system which can usually sufficiently dilute a fuel gas and exhaust it to the outside of the system. <P>SOLUTION: A dilution box 8 to dilute the fuel gas exhausted from an anode electrode with an oxidant gas is placed. A catalyst 16 to promote fuel gas reaction with the oxidant gas is placed in the dilution box 8. An active state of the catalyst 16 is determined based on the detection values of temperature sensors T1 and T2, and the like.
