<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device, reduced in thickness. <P>SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal element 1, in which a liquid crystal layer 5 is enclosed between a pair of substrates 2, 3, and the inner surfaces of the pair of substrates 2, 3 are provided with a plurality of electrodes 6, 7 adapted to control the optical characteristics of the liquid crystal layer 5 by changing the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules by application of voltage; a surface light source having an incident end face 10 for light formed on the end face, which includes a light guide plate 9 having an emitting surface 11 formed on one of two plate surfaces for light entering from the incident end face 10 and a light emitting element 13 disposed opposite to the incident end face 10 of the light guide plate 9, and which is disposed on the opposite side to the observation side of the liquid crystal element 1, a surface light source 8 disposed with the emitting surface 11 of the light guide plate 9 opposite to the liquid crystal element 1, with the emitting surface 11 of the light guide plate 9 opposite to the liquid crystal element 1; a thin film-like polarization layer 15 disposed in close contact; and a sheet polarizer 17 disposed on the observation side of the liquid crystal element 1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
