<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermostat which can control the temperature of a liquid sample reliably without occurrence of a large gap between the outer peripheral surface of a reaction container and the inner peripheral surface of an insertion hole of the reaction container even when the outside diameter of the reaction container varies a little and avoid damage of the reaction container due to frost. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The thermostat includes a pair of block halves 15 and 16 formed by dividing, into two halves, a metal-made block, or an aluminum block 14, having a container holding portion 13 holding the outer periphery of the cylindrical reaction container. The pair of block halves are connected together through an energizing means of energizing in such a direction as to make the two-divided surfaces 15a and 16a of the block halves approach each other and a connecting means of connecting the container holding portions together in an expandable-and-contractible way, and each block half has a cooling and a heating means.
