<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diagnostic device of vehicle which can calculate the mileage that is determined by the state of the vehicle itself while eliminating the impacts of the driving conditions and use conditions on the mileage. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A drive system model for back calculating an engine torque Te and the number of rotations Ne from the vehicle speed and acceleration is memorized. A fuel consumption map which associates the engine torque Te and the number of rotations Ne to a fuel consumption q is memorized. The fuel consumption map updates the data based on the actual controlling result of the engine. Then a driving pattern for diagnosis defined by the vehicle speed is read from the memory at a specific cycle or specific timing and the changes in the engine torque Te and the number of rotations Ne in case the vehicle is driven in such driving pattern are calculated by the drive system model. Then the mileage (mode mileage) X in case the vehicle is driven in the diagnostic driving pattern is calculated using the result of the calculation and the fuel consumption map.
