The method involves controlling the dosing pump (102) dependent on the characteristic signal of a mass flow by the reagent line. The signal is determined with the help of a flow meter, and the signal characterizes the mass flow. The flow meter is arranged in the reagent lines. A control period of the dosing pump is varied depending on the wrong dosing amount. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for operating a dosing device for dosing a reagent introduced in an exhaust-area of an internal combustion engine by a nozzle; (2) a control program for the execution of the method; and (3) a control program product with a program code stored on a machine-readable medium for the execution of the method.
