<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide CETP (cholesterol ester transfer protein) inhibitors useful for raising HDL (high density lipoprotein)-cholesterol, reducing LDL (low density lipoprotein)-cholesterol and for treating or preventing atherosclerosis. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided the compounds represented by the formula or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
