<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an infrared irradiation type image pickup device capable of acquiring a color image having high color reproducibility. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image pickup device generates a visible light image pickup signal by arranging an infrared cut filter (5) at a filtering position, generates an infrared ray mixed image pickup signal by arranging the infrared cut filter (5) at a retracting position, separates the infrared ray mixed image pickup signal into a visible light operation image pickup signal and an infrared ray operation image pickup signal based on a proportion or difference in amount between the visible light image pickup signal and the infrared ray mixed image pickup signal, matches the color balance of the visible light operation image pickup signal based on the visible light image pickup signal to generate a color matching image pickup signal, and applies image processing to the color matching image pickup signal and the infrared ray operation image pickup signal to generate a color image signal. Then, a change in scene is determined, and if it is determined that a scene change exists, the image pickup device regenerates the visible light image pickup signal and updates a matching coefficient of color balance.
